Active Mobility: Walking and Cycling as drivers of truly sustainable transport

Today, 26 November, marks World Sustainable Transport Day, a date established by the UN for the first time in 2023. This day recognises sustainable transport as an essential element, not only in combating climate change, but also in eradicating poverty and building an inclusive society where everyone has a place.

In 2025, this celebration also coincides with the start of the Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026-2035), which will be officially launched on 10 December 2025. Through resolution A/78/148 entitled “Strengthening links between all modes of transport to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals”, the UN reinforces the opportunity to raise public awareness of the importance of sustainable transport and its promotion at a global level.

World Sustainable Transport Day reminds us that active mobility is not just an alternative, but a necessity to address the climate and social challenges of the 21st century.

The National Strategy for Active Mobility, in its cycling and walking components, takes on precisely this ambition: that walking and cycling become an integral part of everyday travel in our cities.
