THE PEP launches new compendium of National Walking Case Studies
In March 2026, the new compendium of National Walking Case Studies was launched, as part of the Transport , Health and Environment Pan-European Programme (THE PEP) meeting.
THE PEP is a unique intersectoral policy platform, bringing together Member States and diverse stakeholders in the pan-European region with the aim of cooperating and developing joint policy approaches and promoting healthier, greener and more sustainable mobility and transport systems.
This new publication brings together 20 international good practice examples that demonstrate how walking can be effectively integrated into public policies. The case studies support the implementation of the Pan-European Master Plan on Walking, published in 2024, which advocates the systematic integration of walking into decisions on urban planning, transport, public health, the environment and social cohesion, addressing in national authorities.
Among the selected cases, Portugal is highlighted as a good practice in the dimension of Processes, namely in the coordination between different sectors and levels of governance. This recognition highlights the importance of the institutional
role in the articulation of mobility, health and public space policies, reinforcing walking as a structuring element of national sustainable mobility strategies.
This publication represents a relevant step in strengthening walking as a central pillar of public policies, contributing to more inclusive, healthy and resilient cities, and aligning with the European goals of sustainability, decarbonization and well-being of populations.
