International Walking Day highlights the importance of walking in everyday travel

International Walking Day will be celebrated for the first time on 27 April 2026, highlighting the importance of walking as a fundamental form of everyday mobility, under the slogan “celebrate walking”.

Sustainable, accessible and healthy, walking is part of the start and end of every journey. It also makes an essential contribution to creating more inclusive, vibrant communities with fewer inequalities in access to mobility.

Portugal has been involved in this international initiative from the outset, which was launched as part of the work of the Transport, Health and Environment Pan-European Programme, promoted by the World Health Organisation and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.

The celebration of this day provides an opportunity to reinforce the objectives of the Pan-European Master Plan on Walking, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and other international initiatives dedicated to active mobility.

More than just a symbolic date, International Walking Day is a starting point for recognising, valuing and promoting walking as a mode of transport, not just on 27 April, but every day.
