Sustainable Transport: The Essential Pillar for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2026–2035 as the first United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport, recognizing transport as an essential pillar for meeting the Sustainable Development Goals – from health and equity in access, to energy efficiency and climate action.

The official launch takes place on December 10, at the UN headquarters in New York, and also marks the presentation of the Implementation Plan and the first voluntary commitments of countries and organizations, including joint initiatives by Germany and the United Kingdom to strengthen more sustainable and evidence-based transport systems.

The Decade Implementation Plan is structured around six priorities that will guide policy, investment and international cooperation:

1. Access for all people – ensuring that no one is left behind, with special attention to vulnerable groups and peripheral territories.

2. Low-carbon and resilient systems – aligned with global climate goals and prepared for extreme events.

3. Efficient and sustainable logistics – cleaner, optimized and integrated supply chains.

4. People-centred urban mobility – prioritising active modes (walking, cycling) and quality public transport.

5. Safety and security – reduction of accidents and reinforcement of safety in all forms of transport.

6. Innovation and technology at the service of sustainability – from data and digitalization to new mobility solutions.

For active mobility, this Decade represents a window of opportunity for further political recognition of the value of walking and cycling as everyday modes of transport. Active mobility is one of the most direct ways to implement, in practice, several of the priorities of the Decade: it promotes inclusive access, reduces emissions, improves health and makes cities more humane.
